Reclaiming Work, Rebuilding Health: the power of vocational rehabilitation and individual income protection
When breast cancer disrupted Kirsty’s life, returning to work felt overwhelming. Her recovery had been long and challenging, and although physically improving, she was unsure how to resume her demanding role with confidence.
Through her Aviva individual income protection policy, Kirsty discovered that she could access additional services, including vocational rehabilitation. She was referred to Working To Wellbeing (W2W) and met Emma, her vocational rehabilitation coach.
Together, they developed a plan. Emma introduced strategies to manage Kirsty’s energy and set achievable goals, while also building her confidence and improving communication with her employer. The result? Kirsty was able to return to work with the tools she needed to thrive.
This is the essence of vocational rehabilitation.
What is Vocational Rehabilitation?
Vocational rehabilitation (VR) is often misunderstood. When people hear “rehabilitation”, they may think of substance misuse, or cardiac care. But VR is different, and can be transformative.
According to the Vocational Rehabilitation Association, it is “a multidisciplinary intervention offered to those with physical, psychological and/or social difficulties, enabling a return to work or preventing loss of work.”
At W2W, we go further. We deliver person-centred support that is underpinned by research together with years of combined clinical experience, which is tailored to the individual. Our clients include people affected by cancer, long-term conditions, neurodivergence, menopause, mental health difficulties, and co-morbidities, as well as people recovering from short term illness. We give them work focussed, clinical based support provided by health care professionals who understand about their condition and work.
In the UK, more than 8 million working-age adults live with long-term health conditions, and around 300,000 people leave employment each year due to these challenges. Our aim is to help them stay connected to work and return when the time is right. We know that supporting people at an early stage also prevents people from staying out of work longer than they need to.
Why VR and individual income protection matter, especially for the self-employed
Kirsty’s story shows the impact of early, structured rehabilitation. But not everyone can access this kind of support.
For the self-employed, the risks are greater. With no employer sick pay or HR team, illness can mean serious financial and professional disruption. The pressure to return to work quickly, often too quickly, can hinder recovery.
Individual Income Protection (IIP) combined with vocational rehabilitation offers a crucial safety net. It delivers both financial stability and clinical, work-focused support, enabling self-employed individuals to return in a realistic, sustainable way.
Through Aviva, Kirsty was able to benefit from the joined-up model that they offer.
Our approach
Partnering with insurers, W2W has supported over 4,000 individuals since 2012, using a unique behavioural health coaching programme rooted in the biopsychosocial model. Our team includes HCPC-registered occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists, dietitians, and career coaches, all trained to address the intersection of health and work.
We take a personalised approach to supporting someone to remain in work or return to work after a period of absence. It includes a blend of clinical input, practical guidance, return-to-work planning, and collaboration with line managers and HR. It considers health recovery within a work context, which means it helps someone to consider how they are going to manage, for example, their fatigue at work.
We don’t medicalise people’s problems—we empower them. Support typically includes:
- Work and the impact of their condition on employability
- Reducing symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, pain and cognitive overload
- Managing energy, setting boundaries, and planning sustainable routines
- Rebuilding confidence, clarity and purpose
- Equipping people with tools and strategies to thrive and sustain long-term employment
Most importantly, our support is holistic, person-led, and joined-up.
Impact that matters
This approach drives real outcomes:
The results of vocational rehabilitation speak volumes:
- 60% of claimants supported by Working To Wellbeing return to work
- Statistically significant reductions in fatigue, anxiety, mood and quality of life.
Client satisfaction remains exceptionally high:
- 97% rated the service as excellent
- 80% said it helped them return to work
- 100% would recommend the service
This is not just about returning to work—it’s about reclaiming purpose, identity, and independence.
One claimant summarised it best:
“I would like to sincerely thank my Working To Wellbeing coach for helping me with ideas and reminding me that I’m only human. I would really have struggled with my return to work …. without them”
Why it matters to insurers
Aviva’s case study with W2W shows what’s possible when policyholder benefits are designed to add real, measurable value. For insurers and intermediaries, offering access to high-quality vocational rehabilitation elevates your proposition, especially in a competitive market.
For policyholders, it’s life-changing. For the self-employed, it can be business-saving.
